Help Me MooGoo: Acne

If you’re reading this, chances are you, or someone you love has Acne, and has probably also tried lots of different products.  You’d also know that there are lots of factors that cause acne and treatments can have varying results.  It’s the way skin is – it’s never quite the same as anyone else’s!

Most formulations for acne contain Benzoyl Peroxide Bleach.  Bleach can be quite effective at clearing up the Acne, and is also a reasonably priced ingredient so helps keep the costs down.  Our ingredient philosophy at MooGoo is to use only naturally derived, non-irritating ingredients as close to food as possible.  Bleach just doesn’t cut it.  We think it’s much too harsh to put on your lovely skin – no matter how mad at that Acne you are!

So what do MooGoo suggest for Acne?

Love.  Help your skin to get in really good condition so the Acne can’t thrive.  Here’s our simple 2 Step Process (with a bonus third step if you’re so inclined).

Step 1: Cleanse with Oil.

Yes, you read that right.  Oil.  Cleansing Oils are made with a combination of drawing oils and moisturising oils.  The drawing oils will help remove old sebum (your skin’s oil) as well as dirt, makeup, sunscreen and even waterproof mascara.  The moisturising oils help leave your skin soft and moisturised.  Acne can be caused by sebum becoming rancid, so removing old sebum gently, puts you at an advantage.

How to Use:  Massage your chosen oil cleansing product onto your face in the shower or at the sink. Leave for a minute which lets the oils soak into your pores.  Rinse off with water.  For a deeper cleanse massage the oil onto your face as above.  Warm up a washcloth and lay it over your face.  Doing so helps warm up the old oils and waxes in your skin, in turn making them easier to wash away.  After a minute, rinse off with cold water.  The oils have a slight astringent effect, so no toner should be required.  Cleanse morning and night.

Products:  Yes, MooGoo makes a cleansing Oil, called simply Oil Cleansing Method.

Step 2: Moisturise.

Unsurprisingly, without a drop of bleach in sight!  As much as anyone’s, acne-prone skin can benefit from a high-quality moisturiser full of antioxidants.

How to Use:  Moisturiser is best applied when your skin is still slightly damp, as it helps it to soak in.  Use your moisturiser morning and night.

Products: As we mentioned above, it’s very common for acne products to contain bleach.  We make a Blemish Cleansing Moisturiser (also known as Acne Cleansing Moisturiser) that doesn’t contain bleach, rather ingredients to help prevent any excess oils from becoming rancid, and some anti-bacterial ingredients, along with anti-inflammatory and skin soothing ingredients.

This process isn’t going to bring you instant results – like bleach sometimes can.  However, it should help prevent the need for bleach based creams after a week or so.  When we first brought out the cream, we had our existing customers test it, and 13 out of 15 found it helped after using for a week or so.  If you’re looking for a healthier way to care for your acne-prone skin, it’s definitely worth giving it a go!

Bonus Step: Tamanu Oil.

We did promise a Bonus Step, didn’t we?!  That step is Tamanu Oil. Tamanu Oil has been used traditionally on wounds in the South Pacific for hundreds of years.  In recent years there have been a number of studies showing it helps reduce scars (including acne scars) and is anti-inflammatory - amongst other things.  We suggest applying it at night, if you’d like to give it a try – it has quite an intense smell.  After Step 1, massage a couple of drops of Tamanu onto your face and allow to soak in for 10 minutes.  Then continue with Step 2.  If you’re in a rush, you can always mix the Oil with your Blemish Cleansing Moisturiser in the palm of your hand.

As with all natural products, we recommend you perform a patch test before use!
